Raptors

Raptors or “Birds of Prey” are those birds that hunt for food. Most birds hunt down insects, molluscs, small fishes, amphibians, small reptiles, etc. but those are not covered under this category. Raptors have developed themselves as the hunting machines. These birds hunt vertebrates and animals that are sometimes way bigger in size as compared to the hunter itself.

Raptors have evolved three basic parts of their body for hunting:

Eyesight – These birds can see far and can detect even a very small movement in their territory. It helps in tracking their prey.

Talons – Curved and pointed claws of these birds are often termed as talons that enables them to catch their prey while they are pouncing on them at ferocious speeds.

Beaks – Sharp and curved beaks are primary characteristics of raptors as these help them in tearing flesh easily and devouring their prey before another raptor snatches it from them.

As per Forrest-India, raptors perform the role of keeping rodents and other small animals in control.

Even though most raptors are tree-dwelling, we have made a separate section for these birds owing to their popularity and grandeur. In this category, we will mostly cover eagles, kites, ospreys, harriers, hawks, falcons, etc.

India has its fair share of raptors but its strategic location and rich biodiversity has paved way for a number of migratory raptors halting in or coming to India during various months of the year as well. Let us enjoy the beauty of these birds and learn some interesting facts in this journey presented by our Nature Storytellers.
