As per zoology, there is nothing like land birds. But we, at Nature Storyteller, have created this specific section so that our readers can find these birds easily as per the behaviour that a layman understands. In this section, we have included terrestrial birds, pheasants, ratites and a few others that can fly albeit very less.
Our National Bird, the Peafowl, has been included in this category along with some very common land birds such as ostriches, kiwi, emu, cassowary, etc.
Most of these birds have lost the ability to fly due to their behavioural patterns and habitat. However, these birds have better agility and swiftness which makes them tough to capture or hunt. Many of these birds have been captured and kept as pets for thousands of years.
A number of these birds have been hunted for meat as well. Pheasants, francolins, partridges, etc. have been in the diet plan of various tribes that dwell in the jungles. However, their conditions have improved since most states have put a ban on their hunting and consumption. Black Francolin has been declared as the State Bird of Haryana.
Fowls and turkeys, that includes the majority of the non-vegetarian diet, are covered in this category. Most poultry farms across the world rear them for human consumption. In this section, we will bring you interesting information and beautiful photos of land birds captured from the cameras of Nature Storytellers.
